Aurora, Colorado Cinema Massacre

25 Jul

A small snippet of my thoughts on this situation at present- there will certainly be more thoughts from any and all of us who have considered this situation as more of the story develops.

I don’t believe he wanted to die. I don’t believe he had a purpose for his actions, other than wanting to make an immense statement. We have seen similar situations with very different outcomes (granted, this is still an infantile case)- i.e. outright suicide post homicide, suicide by cop, or, as was the case here in Atlanta several years ago, disarming a deputy during an ongoing trial and killing even more people.

I understand that sometimes people lose their grip on reality. Sometimes, life occurrences lead people to do things they wouldn’t otherwise. Sometimes, people just can’t deal and lose sight of that reality and accompanying rationality. Sometimes, they feel there is an inevitable end, and, in light of that end, they may become desperate for some semblance of control in their life or within their circumstances.

However, I have dealt directly with upstanding members of society, as well as derelicts, who have blatantly admitted their guilt against others. The number of these people is too great to remember, even in my fairly short career. These people don’t give a damn about others, even while they pursue their own goals, aspirations- their own personal end.

There is supposed to be a ‘reason’ for everything. Unfortunately, and certainly against what the media would have us believe, there isn’t always a ‘reason’. Sometimes, people are just bad people. Sometimes, people are killed- and there is NO REASON. Sometimes, there is no one to blame. And sometimes, the most obvious culprit is the correct culprit.

In any and all of these circumstances, I feel it is my right as a living, breathing human being to be able to protect myself, to protect my family and to protect my property against anyone who may seek to harm any or all of these- regardless of their thought processes. I firmly believe that, had the law allowed individuals the right to ‘open weapons carry’ and/or ‘concealed weapons carry’, enabling citizens who so choose to have some sort of personal protection on them, those able-bodied and/or trained individuals in the situation on the night of the Aurora, Colorado murders could have certainly made a remarkable difference in the overall outcome of the situation, including number of casualties. I believe that, had this been the case, many of the deceased might still be alive to give their account. Many families might be in the beginning steps of helping a loved one heal instead of the beginning phases of the grieving process as they attempted to get past the death of a loved one.

This man, James E. Holmes, apparently obtained his weapons and ammunition legally. But those of us who choose to be lawful, as well as prepared will pay for his actions.

However, the illegal trade/sale of guns will continue, regardless of the ability, or inability, of good honest citizen’s abilities to get their hands on protection in order to ensure the security of the lives of their loved ones, the safety of their property and those on their property, or their continued ability to secure their livelihood for their family.

Because, when it comes right down to it, criminals don’t care how they acquire their weapons, which become their status symbols as well as a stigma upon law-abiding citizens who continue to maintain lawfulness, even though they are scared to death that our government will continue to put all the power in the hands of those who care not for this country, our individual states nor any of their laws to make our wonderful country safe.

“A strong body makes a strong mind. As to the species of exercise I advise the gun. While this gives moderate exercise to the body it gives boldness, enterprise and independence to the mind. Let your gun, therefore, be the constant companion of your walks.”
~ Thomas Jefferson

“The people of the various provinces are strictly forbidden to have in their possession any swords, bows, spears, firearms or other types of arms. The possession of these elements makes difficult the collection of taxes and dues, and tends to permit uprising.”
~Toyotomi Hideyoshi, Japanese Shogun, August 29, 1558

“Switzerland is a land where crime is virtually unknown, yet most Swiss males are required by law to keep in their homes what amounts to a portable, personal machine gun.” ~Tom Clancy
